Shading Techniques to Combat Coral Bleaching

As summer approaches and water temperatures rise, corals face increasing stress, which can lead to bleaching. To mitigate this, we install shading over our coral nurseries. Think of it as creating an umbrella to protect the corals from the harmful UV rays from the scorching summer sun, similar to how you might seek shade to avoid sunburn.

Also, what many people don’t realize is that corals house crucial, symbiotic microalgae within their tissues, which feed their coral hosts through photosynthesis. During heatwaves, the distressed corals expel their photosynthetic, symbiotic microalgae, which are the source of their nourishment and their vibrant color, leading to bleaching. By reducing light exposure during these periods, we minimize the risk of photosynthetic stress and fortify coral resilience against the complex hazards of a heatwave.

Our experience has shown that early intervention is key. By shading coral colonies before the onset of a heatwave, we provide them with a better chance of surviving high temperatures. Last year, our shaded nurseries showed significantly greater resilience compared to unshaded ones, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in coral conservation.

Leveraging AI for Coral Monitoring

Technology plays a crucial role in our coral monitoring efforts. By using AI and machine learning, we can map, track, and predict coral formations with incredible precision. Our team has spent years conducting a comprehensive baseline assessment of Al Wajh Lagoon's unique ecosystem. Utilizing thousands of images stitched together, we create detailed 3D renderings of the reefs.

AI-powered software like TagLab allows us to monitor changes in coral health over time. These tools not only enhance our ability to understand and visualize the reefs but also help us fine-tune our conservation strategies. They reveal patterns in coral health and growth, ensuring our efforts are aligned with our conservation and regeneration goals.

The Process and Importance of Coral Gardening

Coral gardening, a practical method that involves the (controlled and safe!) fragmentation of branching corals, is another critical technique we use for coral regeneration. This process involves taking a small number of branches from large and mature coral colonies and placing them in top-quality conditions for them to grow. It's akin to propagating plants from cuttings.

We select robust ‘parent’ colonies, remove several branches, and affix them to a substrate or tie them to lines to develop. Once these branches mature, we transplant them into new environments. This method has allowed us to significantly enhance coral coverage across multiple sites. Last season alone, we successfully gardened over 2,500 coral branches in just 10 days.
