DP World has welcomed Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, to officially break ground on a new approximately $18 million Fremantle Rail Interchange project -- a major investment in critical infrastructure designed to strengthen Western Australia’s freight network, improve supply chain efficiency, and support the state’s long-term economic growth.
The project will deliver a new dedicated rail gate connection linking DP World’s Fremantle container operations directly with the North Quay Rail Terminal, streamlining container transfers within the port precinct and cutting more than 20,000 truck movements a year on internal roads.
By shifting more freight by rail – up from 22% to 33% of the total freight volume – the project will deliver measurable gains in productivity and sustainability, reducing emissions, easing congestion, and improving cost efficiency for Western Australian exporters and importers.
Minister Saffioti said the project highlighted the strong collaboration between the State Government and the private sector to deliver modern, sustainable freight infrastructure for Western Australia.
“This investment supports the State Government’s vision for a more efficient and sustainable freight network across Western Australia to strengthen our economy and deliver quality local jobs.
“By shifting more freight from road to rail out of Fremantle Port, this investment will reduce congestion, improve road safety, cut emissions, and strengthen Fremantle’s position as a vital gateway for trade and jobs in our State.
“This project will also play an important role in helping to reduce congestion on our roads during the upcoming closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge by reducing heavy truck movements in and around the port precinct.”
Nicolaj Noes, Executive Vice President, Oceania, DP World said, “DP World is committed to building a more connected and efficient logistics network for Western Australia. This new rail gate connection will improve the reliability and efficiency of rail operations at North Quay and make it easier for our customers to move cargo sustainably and cost-effectively. It’s a strong example of how government and industry can work together to deliver infrastructure that improves productivity, reduces costs, and drives long-term economic value. ”
The Fremantle Rail Interchange will create over 50 direct and indirect local jobs during its construction and operation, while further enhancing Fremantle’s competitiveness and trade efficiency.
The Fremantle development is part of DP World’s nearly$1 billion commitment to upgrade Australia’s port infrastructure by 2028, supported by a series of national projects that enhance rail connectivity, lift operational efficiency and strengthen supply chain resilience. Together, these investments strengthen the integration between our ports, rail, landside logistics and warehousing operations - creating a more connected, multimodal network that delivers smarter, faster and more reliable freight pathways for our customers.
In Australia and New Zealand, DP World operates at over 70 sites, supports more than 4,500 local jobs and over 2,500 Australian businesses.
