The Island of Athar, located in Jazan Region, stands as a silent witness to a once-flourishing civilization whose rapid rise and sudden decline left behind enduring ruins and historical intrigue. Adjacent to the island lies the ancient city of Athar, a site of great historical importance.
Historical sources describe Athar as a thriving port and one of southern Arabia’s most prominent commercial centers. It served as a vital crossroads between major civilizations, connecting maritime trade routes from the East, such as India and China, with those of the Levant and Egypt, while also maintaining strong links with the African coast.

Its economic and urban significance was further enhanced by the presence of a mint where the coin known as the “Athari Dinar” was struck. This dinar, dating back to the 10th century AD, is considered one of the rarest historical gold dinars. Today, one example is housed in the Madinah Museum, another in the Qatar National Museum, and a similar example in the National Library of France in Paris, in addition to five coins held by the Saudi Central Bank.

Beyond its historical value, Athar Island is distinguished by its unspoiled natural beauty. It is surrounded by pristine mangrove forests, clear and shallow waters, and a network of tranquil waterways that support rich marine biodiversity.

Although much of Athar’s history has faded, leaving only remnants of its past, its future remains promising. Planned investment and development initiatives aim to revive the island as a sustainable and modern urban destination, while preserving its authentic identity and cultural heritage.
